Worse Than a Bum
Can you relate to this?
This is a story about a friend who has been unsatisfied with his current job. He holds a supervisorial position in a big company. That’s what the documents say about him. He wasn’t sure about it though.
Every day, he wakes up with a cloud in his mind. He brushes his teeth, takes a bath and dresses himself for a very reason that he needed to. He knows he has to swipe his ID, go to the office, do some clerical works for at most 2 hours, check email, read yahoo news, spend more time chatting with officemates, spend some time listening to complaints of officemates, spend some time to do other things not related to work, take his lunch by 11:30, take a nap until 1 PM, check for any missed activities, chat some more, listen to more complaints, wait for the 3 PM siren, swipe his ID again to logout, go home, change clothes, rest, watch movies, eat, watch more movies, freshen up and rest. All these things happen just like it’s pre-programmed.
Then questions in his head were popping relentlessly. “Am I just meant only to do these routines?” He knew he deserves to do more than just what he has been doing lately. He receives a salary he feels he doesn’t deserve. Doing these things every day feels worse than being a bum. He has a job that helps him keep with his finances but it’s also his job that makes him feel hollow and directionless.
I feel for this man being my friend. But I guess all he needs to do for the mean time is to expand the limits of his patience. Things like that really happen to anybody if not to everybody. Perhaps it is simply part of the whole process of living. You can’t just be upbeat all the time. You can’t just feel contented all the time. The feeling of discontentment is just a good sign of something greater in the future. Feeling bum even with your existing job is a lot better than being bum at all. If your current job allows you to at least keep up your finances, then you have enough reason to be patient with it. Maybe positive reinforcement will help you see the bright side of staying in your job for awhile. If you feel being deluded with negative feelings, you need to control yourself. You need to learn to convert these feelings into an opportunity. Sooth yourself by doing things you love. Be productive at your own cost, that’s for your own benefit.

So many people lead lives like this. I feel sorry for them. Maybe your friend needs to write for triond instead of eating and watching movies at the end of the day!

A lot of people these days would be thrilled with any job that helped pay the bills with so little actualy work involved.

Good post. The job isn’t too demanding, so he should have some energy left at the end of the day to follow other interests.

This is very relative. Well, one question I used to ask with applicants during interview is “what you will choose, a job that offers you a big range of salary but has nothing to do with your finished degree or a job with a “right salary” but offer you a career growth. It’s obvious that many chose the latter..
